Judaism teaches reverence for life and respect for our loved ones when they have passed on from this world. Through the religious services of our congregation and the burial grounds of the cemetery, Beth Shalom has always helped and enhanced expressions of tribute and respect for the names and memories of dear departed that have been taken from our midst. Generations of our members and the wider community of Pittsburgh and surrounding towns and communities have always turned to our spiritual leaders and congregational services for comfort at times of sorrow and for remembrance through seasons of renewal.

MonumentSince Biblical days, our Jewish tradition has taught us to mark and. revere the final resting place of a loved one. Ever since our patriarch Jacob set up a monument at the grave of his beloved wife Rachel, it has been a custom among our people to honor the departed by engraving their name as an enduring and lasting memory for future generations. Throughout the Jewish world, one of the most respected sights of Jewish life and one of the sources of Jewish history has been the personal names and dates of the deceased and the family histories that stand proudly on the consecrated ground of Jewish cemeteries.

Following the custom of our people, a tombstone or monument is dedicated approximately one year after death, thereby allowing family and friends to mark the first yahrzeit or anniversary of death in a meaningful way that perpetuates their love and tribute for the deceased. We now are ready to help you fulfill this mitzvah as part of the services provided through our congregation.
