Life Cycle of Services

Family Shabbat Services: 9:00 AM in the Faye Rubenstein Weiss Sanctuary

Shabbat Morning Services for Children and Youth:

All Youth Services (with the exception of USY) meet in the 3rd floor Torah Scrollsschool wing
USY services meet on the 2nd floor in the Homestead Hebrew Chapel. All services begin at 10:30 am

Kiddie Minyan:3-5 years old (through Pre-K):
Kiddie Minyan is a creative prayer experience for our children ages 3 through 5 years old. Kiddie Minyan meets each Shabbat and festival morning and is a fun-filled experience including games, songs, snacks and an age appropriate prayer service. Kiddie Minyan is a great way to familiarize our children with the Shabbat service and for them to become accustomed to coming to the synagogue for Shabbat.

Shabbat Shalom Family Circle:Families with young children (through 5 years old):
Entering its third year, Shabbat Shalom Family Circle meets every first and third Shabbat morning of the month at 11:00 a.m. Designed to meet the social and spiritual needs of children from infancy to 5 years of age, the program includes songs, stories, prayers, dance, drama, games and refreshments. The Family Circle links the children to one another, to other concerned Jewish parents and to the Synagogue. The Family Circle enjoys the active participation of parents who lead this bi-monthly program on a rotating basis, and who themselves are enriched by the experience. For many families, the Shabbat Shalom Family Circle is a way to meet new friends and create community. New families are always welcome!

Joseph and Mildred Stern Junior Congregation:3rd-7th grade children:
Junior Congregation is a service run by kids for kids. Learning and leading prayers, preparing and giving Divrei Torah, leading games about Parshat Hashavua and putting on short plays are some of the ways we celebrate Shabbat and holidays at Jr. Congregation. Children from 3rd through 7th grade from all parts of Congregation Beth Shalom come together to pray, to sing and to enjoy a little kiddush! This is a time when various ages and stages of kids from the Beth Shalom community get together, share skills, and learn from one another. Junior congregation meets every Shabbat and festival morning.

USY Services: Post Bar/Bat Mitzvah - 12th grade:
USY services are a unique way for our high school aged youth group to pray together every Shabbat. Each service is organized and lead by the youth group members. This year we plan to touch on different themes ranging from social action and Israel, to focusing on different parts of the service itself. In the past the services have ranged from a traditional Shabbat services to a play and pray where the service was held in Frick Park and followed by different Shabbat appropriate activities. USY services offer a wonderful way for Beth Shalom's high school aged congregants to take on a participatory role in the planning and leadership of the Shabbat morning service.

Daily Religious Services

An active, egalitarian minyan meets twice daily in the Homestead Hebrew Chapel. Our calendar lists times

The Library Minyan

Many flourishing Conservative congregations have embraced alternative minyanim. Beth Shalom's Library Minyan began nine years ago in the synagogue library as a way to meet the needs of those seeking an informal, participatory, Shabbat morning service. Since that time, as many members of the Beth Shalom community have looked to the Library Minyan as a way to support Jewish learning and to enrich spiritual life, the minyan has moved to the spacious Helfant Chapel.
The Shabbat Service is grounded in traditional liturgy and familiar melodies. One important goal is to make the minyan accessible and comfortable to people who have varying degrees of familiarity with traditional prayer. As in Beth Shalom's Faye Rubenstein Weiss Sanctuary Service, the Library Minyan is committed to egalitarianism, equal participation for men and women. This means that every Jew can receive the honor of being called to and read from the Torah. Everyone who wishes to is encouraged to learn and to lead all parts of the traditional prayer services, including giving a Dvar Torah (serman/discussion). Along with our Rabbis, congregants lead different portions of the Shabbat morning services each week. At the conclusion of services, the entire Beth Shalom community joins together for a kiddush.
The Library Minyan provides a warm, relaxed place to share in Jewish worship, study, and thought; to celebrate the joyous times of life; to mourn a beloved relative; and to make lasting friendships. Like Congregation Beth Shalom as a whole, the Library Minyan has truly gone "m'chayil l'chayil," from strength to strength, and looks forward to further growth and success.
